Qualvu pioneers innovative and engaging ways to find, generate and share insight

The Qualvu Timeline

Qualvu is Founded

Qualvu was created with the vision that great qualitative research wasn't measured in frequent flier miles, and that new and innovative methods would unleash new powers in getting deeply into the lives and minds of consumers. Five years later, our frequent flier accounts are a mere shadow of their former selves, and video-based research is flying past 50+ years of traditional data collection.

VideoDiaries using Webcams

Qualvu evolved from humble beginnings and a basic need - to help agency clients develop and optimize marketing communications. The research assignments were given to the participants through the Qualvu portal and they responded via desktop webcams on their own schedule, from the comfort of their own home, without the presence of a researcher or a room full of strangers to impact their behavior.

Highlight Reels in VideoReport

Collecting video-based responses was the relatively easy part. Organizing it into actionable outcome was the real challenge. Qualvu met this challenge by building robust, intuitive tools to organize videos and summarize highlight clips, an advantage of having technology as a core foundation of the company.

Flip Cams take VideoDiary mobile

Qualvu goes mobile with the introduction of flipcams, taking research away from the desktop and into every corner of the home and wherever else participants' lives took them. This shift revealed that what the consumer does versus what they recall doing or believe they do is often wildly different. Qualvu could now observe real behaviors as they occurred, providing richer, powerful, more accurate, data. Read more about Finding New Insights from New Places.

Qualvu Goes Global

Our U.S. clients quickly saw the opportunity to expand internationally with our methodology and services. Qualvu provided a scalable, cost-effective way to conduct video research anywhere in the world, both rural and urban areas. Qualvu identified partners in each country to recruit participants and provide in-language support. The goal was to set up the respondents to be successful in online, video-based research. Experience matters and a third of our projects are now outside the U.S. and this number is expected to reach 50 percent by the third quarter of 2013 (see coverage map). Searchable Time-coded Video Transcripts

The ability to clip video-based data for use in our reports was a key first step. Next was our ability to use new technologies to systematically code responses and unlock greater depth of insight. Along the way we proved to our clients that our embrace of innovation translated into more accurate, rigorous, and insightful answers to their strategic questions.

Full Service Research Shop

Delivering greater depth of insight from systematically coded responses was a major milestone for Qualvu but we didn't stop there. Our clients needed more from us and we delivered, transitioning to a full service research organization, able to support our partners from recruitment to reporting. We hired and trained 20+ qualitative researchers to think differently about research design and how to leverage richer data to a more actionable, insightful outcome. Our clients are truly enabled to sell insight to their stakeholders and Qualvu helps them make better, more strategic business decisions. Learn more About Us.

Usability Testing with Screen Tracking Recording

Qualvu introduced screen tracking for UX and online behavioral research. The Screen Tracker plug-in records the entire desktop with a synchronized camera recording of the participant. Clients can track the participant's mouse cursor interactions while also seeing the participant's facial expressions, and hearing their narrative. This is impactful for software development and for developing digital assets in marketing campaigns.

iHUTS with Qualvu Mobile App

Qualvu took the search for deeper truths even further with the introduction of the Qualvu Mobile App. This app provided even more flexibility to capture consumer experiences throughout the home, into the participants' natural environment where they use the products. Anywhere in the home from the bathroom sink to the bedroom closet to the kitchen pantry, Qualvu was able to see participants in their natural environment, on their own schedule, changing the way clients think about their connection to the consumer. Buyer/Rejecter Studies with In-Vehicle Data Collection

Taking the mobile application out on the road was the next step, literally. Research data could now be generated in-vehicle, for days and weeks at a time. From vehicle performance evaluation to observation on the social interactions in-vehicle, consumers gave their moments of truth, while behind the wheel.

×

Analytical Tagging Framework

Qualvu began using a structured analytical framework by tagging codes to videos that enabled improved depth and timeliness of data mining to generate insights.

Multi-Methodology Research

To really achieve the richest, deepest insights possible, Qualvu understood that capturing videodiaries is sometimes just the beginning of the process. To deliver the last mile of data after the videodiaries, Qualvu conducts live interactions with the most impactful consumers through a moderated LiveBlog session, a recorded phone-based depth interview or select in-home interviews; all of which is still captured in the platform and integrated with the analysis and reporting. Clients love the interaction with their most compelling recruits and take ownership of the data and learnings.
